Russia orders its troops to withdraw from the Ukrainian city of Jershon

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ordered on Wednesday the withdrawal of his troops from the occupied Ukrainian city of Kherson and the adoption of defensive lines on the opposite bank of the Dnieper River.

The announcement marked one of the most important withdrawals of Russia and a possible turning point in the guerrawhich is nearing the end of its ninth month.

In televised comments, General Sergei Surovikin, in command of the war, said it was not possible to keep the city of Jershon supplied.

“We are going to save the lives of our soldiers and the fighting ability of our units. Keeping them on the right (west) bank is useless. Some of them can be used on other fronts,” Surovikin said.

The news came after weeks of Ukrainian advances on the city and a rush by Russia to relocate tens of thousands of its residents.

Shoigu replied: “I agree with your conclusions and proposals. Proceed to the withdrawal of the troops and take all measures to transfer the forces to the other side of the river.”

The announcement had been anticipated by influential Russian war bloggers, who described it as a bitter blow.

According to General Surovikin, Russia will organize its front line on the other bank of the Dnieper. Russian troops had already been forced to withdraw from the Kharkov region in September.
