The Russian Foreign Ministry warned on Thursday that Moscow would reciprocate any new sanctions imposed by the European Union, over the Alexei Navalny case.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a press briefing held today, Thursday, that calls for tightening European sanctions against Moskou in recent days are “not surprising,” noting that this has become normal for the European bloc since 2014.
Zakharova said that officials in Brussels “resort to sanctions whenever they face the utter keenness of Russia and other sovereign states to protect their legitimate interests and prevent blatant interference in their affairs and not to be dragged behind the Western architects of the world order.”
And she continued, “We would like to warn our partners in the European Union against taking any other rash step because it will definitely require an appropriate response from us.”
And she stressed that “it is absolutely unacceptable to exploit human rights and democratic principles and make them a geopolitical tool.”
