The Russian Ministry of Defense said that a de-mining group, as part of a humanitarian mine-clearing operation, dismantled and neutralized US-made cluster bombs in Laos.
According to the ministry, the International Mine Action Center’s Demining Group has discovered more than 100 explosive devices in the area of Takhung Khaykhin Airport in Singhuang Province in Laos since November 2020.
The area cleared of explosives and mines, thanks to the work of the Russian group, amounted to about one hectare.
“The explosive materials found by Russian explosives experts belong to the US-made BLU-26, BLU-63 and BLU-3B cluster bombs, in addition to artillery ammunition of various calibers,” the ministry added in its statement.
The ministry stated that one of the distinctive features of mine clearance in this area is the deep presence of ammunition (at a depth of 1.7 meters), and a large number of ferromagnetic elements, which significantly slow down the pace of search for them.
A group of 32 explosives experts from the International Mine Action Center was dispatched to Laos in November 2020.
