Russian Daniel Medvedev qualified for the quarter-finals of the French Tennis Championship, Marseille, after defeating Belarusian Igor Gerasimov in two clean sets in the final eight.
Medvedev, 25, managed to win the match in his favor in two groups without pay, by 6-2 and 6-4 in one hour and 12 minutes.
In the next round, Medvedev will face Italian Yannick Senir, the winner of his turn over French Hugo Gaston, with two clean sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Medvedev, who is third in the world tennis professional rankings, has ensured that he snatched second place from Spain’s Rafael Nadal when he releases the new classification next Monday, and he will become the first player from outside the quartet consisting of Nadal, Serbian Novak Djokovic (currently number one), Swiss Roger Federer and Britain’s Andy Murray to occupy the center. Second in the world since Nadal overtook Australian player Leyton Hewitt to take over in 2005.
