It is reported that the Soviet Navy was equipped in 1980 with the “Osset-80” electric self-guided torpedo, with a range of 25 kilometers and a cruising speed of 40 knots. The price of the said torpedo was 30 million Soviet rubles, which was equivalent at that time to about 20 million US dollars, because one torpedo contained approximately 34 kilograms of silver.
The Petersburg Naval Military Fair 2019 unveiled a 533 mm T-2 electric torpedo that could be controlled by wire or via the guidance system.
The editor-in-chief of “National Defense” magazine, Alexander Muzgovoy, said that electric torpedoes are a silent weapon, unlike gas and steam torpedoes. It is used to destroy submarines and warships without revealing itself. He added that the enemy did not have enough time to maneuver against the said electric torpedo.
