A report published by the Russian newspaper “Vzglyad” stated that the surprise attack carried out by the Islamic Resistance Movement (agitation) against Israel confused the entire international community and destroyed one of the myths associated with Israel in a few hours.
Writer Yevgeny Krutikov said in his article that “Arab groups” crossed the Gaza border and dismantled the barbed wire and metal barriers, adding that Hamas fighters carried out infiltrations from the sea using steamboats and “strange” parachutes.
A few kilometers from the border with Gaza, Israeli reserve soldiers were stationed at about a dozen fortified points and military bases. The location and arrangement of these fortified points and bases was left without external security or guard service.
Fast break-in
According to the article, Israeli defense points are barracks located behind a fence, with a tower mounted on which a machine gun is automatically controlled from the barracks.
On the other hand, a commercial and primitive quadcopter was able to drop a grenade on the tower and eliminate the defense unit of the “fortified” point.
Then, men entered Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades The military arm of Hamas and various resistance factions occupied barracks and opened fire on soldiers located along the Gaza border.
He added that in total, the Palestinians cut communication between half of the “fortified” sites in just one hour. Large military bases were not guarded, and their personnel did not receive alerts after a level 1 threat was registered.
In fact, no one had time to issue this ultimatum after the outer guards were wounded following the detonation of old Soviet grenade launchers, and the soldiers in the barracks were killed. Moreover, one tank was burned while heading to a location by a grenade also dropped from marches.
The writer stated that groups of Palestinians entered the centers of major settlements on the coast, burned the police building in Ashkelon, and stationed themselves in the center.
At the same time, thousands of missiles were directed from… Gaza strip towards Israel at once, exposing the shortcomings of the Iron Dome system, which for many years was presented as the most advanced in the world. Rockets began falling to the borders of Haifa, which meant that all the occupied territories from south to north were defenseless.
Despite the “primitiveness” of these missiles – as the author described it – any air defense system becomes useless when thousands of them are launched. Also, 12 air defense missiles are unable to shoot down 2,000 targets simultaneously.
Destroy the defense line
As a result, the Palestinians completely destroyed the so-called defense line against Gaza in three hours, moving deeper into the occupied territories. Afterwards, some Arab groups returned to Gaza with the captives, and others remained in several settlements at pre-determined points such as local police stations and military bases.
The writer stated that the way the operation was carried out reveals that Palestinian fighters identified targets in advance, followed advanced methods, coordinated groups’ movements among themselves, and knew communication frequencies and security passwords, which means that developing the plan and reconnaissance of the area took at least six months.
The Israeli intelligence service (Mossad) and the General Security Service consider restricting Hamas’ access to weapons and materials necessary for missile production to be one of their primary goals, so preemptive strikes on Gaza are carried out mainly on missile production sites and warehouses.
The writer pointed out that hundreds of people participated in preparing the attack, including weapons buyers and individual vehicle commanders, something that Mossad and the General Security Service knew nothing about, which indicates the failure of Israeli intelligence.
Unlimited resources
The occupation forces have unlimited financial resources that enable them to acquire modern technology, including an external surveillance system abroad. The occupation’s losses exceeded human resources and equipment, because the Hamas attack also destroyed the myth of the work of the Israeli security forces and their ability to work.
According to the writer, the Israeli security forces were feeding on the glories of the victories of past generations, and this is evident in the ineffectiveness of intelligence and counter-intelligence, and the Israeli army’s neglect of the changes in combat tactics that are occurring in current conflicts at the present time.
Meanwhile, the IDF did not provide a clear answer about how the attack was planned and merely made loud political statements stating that the Israeli response would be harsh in the near future. However, the first strike prepared under the watchful eye of Israeli intelligence and counterintelligence was actually missed.
Two options before Israel
Currently, the Israeli leadership faces two options: either invade the Gaza Strip by land or limit itself to missile attacks from the air only. From a political point of view, Israel cannot be content with responding with rocket attacks on Gaza and flexing its firepower by redeploying elite tank brigades like the Golani in the south.
Since the occupation has not suffered such losses for many decades, the response will be more violent than in previous cases of aggravation of the Arab-Israeli conflict. However, the Arabs succeeded in accomplishing the main task of destroying the myths surrounding the Israeli defensive systems, a victory that is more important than the purely military counterattack that the occupying forces are currently organizing against them.
The writer emphasized that the current events could reshape the entire military and political structure in the region, which could lead to the emergence of new alliances and new front lines.
