The Russian ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, affirmed that the US sanctions against the “Northern Torrent 2” gas pipeline project contradict international law and violate the principles of free trade.
He said, “Washington has been trying for a long time and by all means to prevent the implementation of this international commercial project. Many legislative measures have been taken and there are constant threats to Russia and its European partners interested in cooperation in the gas sector.”
He added, “The United States is trying to achieve its narrow, opportunistic goals, and has crossed the limits of decency.”
He pointed out that “the purpose of the sanctions is the desire to create an advantage for itself in the energy market in Europe in order to force the countries of the region to buy American raw materials.”
In the end, he explained, there will be no winners in this adventure.
And “Northern Torrent-2” is a Russian project to extend two gas pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters annually from the Russian coast across the bottom of the Baltic Sea to Germany.
Most of the project has been implemented, but it faces obstacles due to US pressure, as Washington threatens companies participating in the project with sanctions.
