(Trends Wide) — Travelers who head to South Beach, Miami for the bars and nightclubs that party until dawn may find that the parties don’t last as long as they used to.
A judge ruled Tuesday that the closing time for alcohol sales in parts of South Beach could be changed from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. after several attempts by Miami Beach officials to address complaints from city residents about the night clubs.
“Hopefully we can start implementing the law very soon,” Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said in a Facebook post after Tuesday’s decision. “This is a residential neighborhood that shouldn’t have to put up with 24-hour nightclubs.”
Under the rule, “private clubs located in” Miami Beach’s mixed-use entertainment district south of 16th Street, known as MXE, “may only offer alcoholic beverages for sale or consumption on the premises between 8 a.m. :00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.
In previous years, Miami Beach officials have voted to temporarily limit alcohol sales in the district until 2 am for the spring break season, also known as spring break season.
Miami-Dade County Circuit Court Judge Reemberto Díaz on Tuesday denied a motion for temporary injunction filed by Amnesia International attorneys.
The ruling allows the city to make the previous cut-off time permanent.
Amnesia International owns Story, a 2,500-square-meter nightclub at MXE that operates four days a week from 11pm to 5am and has strongly opposed the move going into effect.
Trends Wide has reached out to Amnesia International’s lawyers for comment.
Under the new rule, “restaurants that do not operate as dance halls or entertainment establishments” can still serve alcohol until 5 a.m.
