SAN ANTONIO – Enjoy our unseasonably warm weekend if this is your preferred type of weather this time of the year as a blast of winter will push into the state for the upcoming week. Dropping temperatures but also eventually the risk for an icy mix or snow for parts of Texas are ahead.
Jumping ahead to next week, a large upper low will take shape in the Southwest Tuesday to Wednesday then begin to push east. This upper low along with a strong jet stream positioned over Texas and a tight temperature gradient near the South Texas coast will induce a surface low to develop near Brownsville Wednesday. This low should drift north then turn northeast through Thursday.
So the first part of the week is sunshine with cold mornings and cool to chilly afternoons. You’ll notice changes Wednesday as skies become cloudy and the atmosphere tries to moisten up to produce a little precipitation.
The first part of this overall transition is late Sunday as a second cold front pushes across in the evening. By Monday morning, San Antonio will be just barely above freezing while our northern tier counties are below freezing. Monday night to Tuesday morning will see a hard freeze in San Antonio, dropping into the upper 20s. A few spots around San Antonio could flirt with the mid 20s. You’ll definitely want to protect plants, pipes, people and pets Monday night.
Tuesday night to Wednesday morning is below freezing again but given increasing clouds through the night, probably not as cold as Tuesday morning. Still, another night to protect plants, people and pets. Pipes should be okay as we’ll only be at or below freezing by a degree or two.
Lets break down the precipitation forecast. Wednesday is a day where cloudiness moves in and is thickening up. There’s just enough lift over us that I can’t rule out spotty cold showers or a sleet shower. The Hill Country could see a scattered wintry mix of sleet or even a few snowflakes (light). But the bulk of the day is more clouds than precipitation and by the afternoon to evening, temperatures in San Antonio will range from 35 – 40. So while very cold, roads should be just fine. We will however want to keep an eye on the Hill Country through the day into Wednesday night.
Wednesday night through Thursday, the depth of moisture in the atmosphere and lift increases. This will result in very cold patchy rain in and around San Antonio with a low end chance of a little wintry mix especially in the morning. The Hill County and west to Val Verde County will be a touch colder and could support a little more wintry mix.
Of note, if you have travel plans north to northwest from our viewing area in Texas, odds for an icy mix or even snow will increases where it is colder.
