Sandy Alcántara wins the National League Cy Young Award

The Dominican baseball player won the award for the best pitcher in the National League. Alcántara also became the first player in Miami Marlins history to earn recognition from the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA).

Sandy Alcántara outvoted Julio Urías, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, and American Max Fried, of the Atlanta Braves, and was even declared the unanimous winner.

He is the first Dominican to win the award since 2005, and he is also only the third national to receive it after Pedro Martínez and Bartolo Colón. Sandy had a 2.28 ERA and led the MLB in innings (228.2), complete games (6) and in games of at least eight innings (14), and was fourth in strikeouts (207).

“I am very happy with the type of season that I was able to have this year (…) It is as I have always told the media: my mentality is to be a ‘lion’ on the mound, to finish all my starts”, commented the player after awarding the award.

Alcántara stood out by having more than 16 starts with six innings when currently the common thing is that there are only five. The pitcher threw 23.2 more than anyone else in the majors and also made the most innings since 2016, when David Price had 230.
