Ovidio Guzmán López, alias El Ratón, was accused in February 2019, together with his brother Joaquín, of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana for importation into the United States, according to information from the Department of Justice of that country.
At the time, Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of that agency’s Criminal Division and Special Agent in Charge Scott Brown of the Service’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Arizona Field Office Immigration and Customs Enforcement made the announcement.
The formal accusation details that from April 2008 to April 2018 they conspired to distribute said narcotics from our country to United States territory.
This case is assigned to US District Judge Rudolph Contreras.
Court documents explain that the Guzmán López brothers imported into the United States at least five kilograms of cocaine, grams of methamphetamine and a ton of marijuana.
This accusation occurred months prior to the first arrest of the son of the drug trafficker.
expedited extradition
The foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, explained that there will not be a prompt extradition of Ovidio Guzmán to the United States, because the formalities established by Mexican law must be complied with.
The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that, in addition, the son of Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán faces a legal process in Mexico, which led to the arrest warrant against him.
He indicated that he supposes that a process will be seen, in accordance with the law, against the son of El Chapo and that the possible extradition will take place as the case progresses.
Marcelo Ebrard explained, before the media, that the United States government issued a provisional arrest warrant, which dates from September 2019, although he said that the United States authorities must still present elements so that Mexico can carry out the extradition of Ovidio Guzmán.
Regarding the extradition (to the United States) we will see, as progress is made, what elements (the US authorities) provide and what will be the criteria that the prosecution will follow; but, as of today, I would expect a process here in Mexico, ”he said.
On the other hand, when asked if any foreign agency had participated in the arrest of the drug trafficker in Jesús María, Sinaloa, yesterday, Ebrard Casaubón explained that he has no information that this has happened.
At present, the US authorities maintain a reward of 5 million dollars for anyone who provides information on three other brothers of Ovidio Guzmán.
