The United States Geological Survey reported Friday that all volcanoes in the Cascade Range are exhibiting normal levels of activity.
This assessment follows an earthquake swarm at Mount Rainier last month, the largest the volcano has experienced in over a decade. Since July 8, more than 1,100 minor earthquakes have been recorded. However, the USGS noted the swarm is weakening, with only about 50 quakes detected in the past week.
Scientists stated that even at its peak intensity, the activity was not a cause for alarm. An agency update explained that while Mount Rainier typically averages about nine earthquakes per month, seismic swarms occur one to two times a year. Officials acknowledged this recent swarm was larger than usual but did not indicate an increased volcanic threat.
In addition to ongoing observation, crews recently installed a new monitoring station at Mount Hood and conducted geochemical sampling at Mount Rainier to support long-term safety and research efforts.
