Self-construction, an option to access a home for 57% of Mexicans; Sedatu and SUMe seek to facilitate the process

Finding a home is a complicated goal for Mexicans; Between labor informality and the lack of access to mortgage loans, the most viable alternative for many is the self-build.

According to data from the National Housing Survey57% of Mexicans prefer to build their own householdsTherefore, the Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) seeks strategic alliances to help them achieve it.

As part of this initiative, the federal government agency signed a collaboration agreement with the organization Sustainability for Mexico (SUMe), in order to strengthen the National Self-Production Strategy.

In addition, they committed to implement and keep updated the National Platform for Self-Production Decide and Build based on the exchange of information.

“This agreement has as its main objective to combine wills, actions, capacities and resources to promote, facilitate and strengthen self-production as an effective mechanism to guarantee the right to adequate housing” commented Melina Castro Urquiza, director of Urban Development, Land and Housing , during the signing.

They go for sustainable self-construction

For her part, Alicia Silva Villanueva, legal representative of SUMe, said that the alliance is relevant to improve the social and sustainable strategy, in addition to supporting Mexican families to access adequate housing through the self production.

“We are interested in advancing in a sustainability agenda. Based on the surveys we have carried out, the majority of Mexicans seek information on sustainable projects and accessible tools. This union allows us to generate new solutions for the benefit of all of us”, commented the specialist.

It is worth mentioning that the results of the agreement will be consolidated on the platform Decide and Build; where people who want to self-produce their home can find reliable options for materials, technical assistants, builders and financial entities closest to their location.
