The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Minister Jong had told the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in his first telephone conversation after his inauguration as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
For his part, the UN Secretary-General expressed his firm support for the Seoul government’s efforts aimed at achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula.
The two sides expressed their evaluation of the leading role of the United Nations and Korea’s contribution to peacekeeping, curbing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, and agreed to strengthen cooperation.
The Secretary-General said that he would positively review his attendance at the Green Growth Summit and the 2030 Global Goals planned to be held in Seoul in May, and a ministerial conference on UN peacekeeping in December.
Minister Jung asked the Secretary-General to pay attention to the Korean people’s pursuit of high-level positions in the United Nations Secretariat. In turn, Guterres promised to review the issue positively, with high appreciation of the capabilities of the Korean people.
Jung also expressed his government’s support for the re-election of the Secretary-General, whose term expires at the end of December.
