New Michigan offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey has quickly impressed head coach Sherrone Moore, not only with his southern accent and sense of humor but more importantly, with his football acumen. While his personality has been a welcome addition, his primary task is to revitalize a struggling offense.
The hire follows a challenging 2024 season for the Wolverines. After three years of success with a physical, run-heavy attack, the unit regressed significantly, finishing 113th nationally by averaging just 22 points per game. The decline prompted a change, with Lindsey replacing Kirk Campbell.
“He’s an outstanding football coach and an outstanding human,” Moore said of his early impressions.
Moore praised their collaboration, noting that their football philosophies are blending seamlessly. He is confident in Lindsey’s ability to merge the established principles of Michigan’s staff with his own innovative ideas to create a dynamic system. “I think Chip has just done a really good job of meshing the things that I’ve wanted and that our staff has wanted and what he has brought in,” Moore stated, adding that the goal is to put players in the best positions to succeed.
Lindsey brings a versatile offensive background. At Auburn, he orchestrated a run-dominant scheme built around running backs Kamryn Pettway and Kerryon Johnson. In contrast, during his time at North Carolina, he led a high-powered passing attack featuring quarterback Drake Maye. Given Michigan’s talent at running back with Jordan Marshall and Justice Haynes, along with Moore’s own preference for a strong ground game, the Wolverines will likely lean on the run once again.
Moore also highlighted the value of Lindsey’s tenure as the head coach at Troy from 2019-2021. While the team’s record was modest, the experience provided Lindsey with leadership skills that Moore, a young head coach, finds invaluable.
“The experience that he has—being a head coach, being a coordinator at different spots—it allows me the ability to just kind of let him handle the offense, handle the players, handle the coaches,” Moore explained. This trust allows Moore to focus on his broader head coaching responsibilities while Lindsey recalibrates the offense for the 2025 season.
