A self-professed ‘love-struck psycho’ who broke into his ex girlfriend’s home to hug her as she slept sent a series of vile texts before he hit her new partner five times with a hammer.
Ryan Joseph Wenzlick had a volatile relationship with Portia Ashton, from Cambridge in New Zealand‘s north, for three or four years until they broke up in March 2020.
The pair continued having sex until July, when the mother-of-two said she wanted to pursue other relationships and stopped replying to his messages.
In December, the High Court heard that when Ms Ashton started seeing Daniel Buckeridge, Wenzlick said he wanted to be with her again and would ‘eliminate anyone who gets in my way’.

‘I’m going to set an example of what is going to happen to any man that touches the woman I wan,’ he wrote, according to the New Zealand Herald.
‘If you f*** that dude I’m going to have to get rid of him too,’ he continued, referring to Mr Buckeridge.
On July 29, Ms Ashton gave the farm worker the finger and closed the curtains when she realised he had arrived at her home unannounced.
Wenzlick started lurking outside the house, knocking on windows to draw attention and begging the woman to go outside and talk to him.

When Ms Ashton and Mr Buckeridge went to bed, he doubled down on his efforts and started sending a series of violent messages.
‘F*** you aye, I just spent two hours stalking Mark setting up to kill him and you’re here cuddled up to this f*** head’.
He broke into the home and started hugging Ms Ashton in bed when her boyfriend went to the bathroom.
She she realised Wenzlick was next to her between the wall and the bed, she ignored him and started hugging her new boyfriend when he returned.

At about 5am, Wenzlick sent her a selfie holding a hammer in the kitchen.
He wrote: ‘Might have been on the floor next to you for half the night but next to you is where I want to be.’
‘See you today sometime please. You actually don’t know what I’ve done to be with you. And what I am capable of … I could have killed him several times over last night while you were sleeping and you wouldn’t have even known until you woke up.’
Wenzlick left the home, but found the pair still in bed at 9am.

Wenzlick pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault in December and will be sentenced on February 16

Mr Buckeridge suffered severe brain damage, skull fractures, bruises and cuts.
He is being treated at a specialist facility, getting occupational, speech and physical therapy.
The man wasn’t able to eat textured foods until September, but has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and will likely have seizures and psychiatric abnormalities for the rest of his life.
Wenzlick pleaded guilty to attempted murder and assault in December and will be sentenced on February 16.
