Sister of man, 28, charged thousands after Thai motorbike crash urges travellers to get insurance

The family of a man facing soaring medical bills after crashing his motorbike in Thailand are encouraging backpackers to doublecheck their travel insurance documents.

28-year-old Adam Davies was left with a fractured skull and other serious injuries as a result of the Boxing Day collision on the island of Ko Tao.

Mr Davies is still being treated in a hospital in Koh Samui and his parents have flown out to watch over him, the BBC reports.

The motoring enthusiast, of Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire, south Wales, was shocked to be left with medical costs which were no longer covered under his travel policy.

His family managed to fundraise almost £22,000 to cover his medical expenses and are now urging backpackers to be vigilant about travel insurance.

Mr Davies’ sister Jess, 30, said that while her brother had worldwide travel insurance, his policy did not cover medical expenses for any period away after 31 days.

‘He was on a little island and he was driving a scooter and he just, I think he came round a bend and just went straight in to an electric pole,’ Ms Davies said.

‘We didn’t find out until it was 24 hours after. He had to be shipped to another island because there was no hospital there and he had multiple injuries, some major injuries and his insurance wouldn’t cover him.’

Now, Ms Davies is spreading the message for travellers to check the small print of their travel policies before going away.

Besides a fractured skull, Mr Davies also suffered a bleed on the brain, a punctured lung, broken ribs, broken clavicle, broken scapula and a fractured ankle

She added: ‘I know it’s annoying to look through… nobody really reads the small print, but I urge everybody to do it. Even if it takes half an hour, it’s worth it.’

Besides a fractured skull, Mr Davies also suffered a bleed on the brain, a punctured lung, broken ribs, broken clavicle, broken scapula and a fractured ankle.

Mr Davies’ parents Alison and Graham intend to stay in Thailand until he is well enough to travel home to Wales.

A spokesman from Adam’s insurer Lloyds bank said: ‘We would always encourage customers looking to travel abroad for an extended period of time to check the terms and conditions of their insurance, whether that’s been provided through their bank account or purchased separately.

‘Most providers, including Lloyds Bank, will make it clear what is covered under your policy when you first take it out, and send annual reminders to make sure it remains suitable for you.’
