United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on Thursday that he had suspended his new technology envoy from work over an investigation into accusations of harassment.
This comes just 6 days after Guterres announced the appointment of Fabrizio Hochschild Drummond as his technology envoy.
“There are allegations that are being investigated and this is the right thing to do,” he said at a news conference in New York, adding that Hochschild had been granted administrative leave “as a precaution.”
Guterres said that he learned of these allegations only two days ago and did not yet know “exactly what the nature of the accusations are.”
He added, “I hope that the investigation will be carried out quickly … There will not always be any tolerance regarding sexual or other forms of harassment.”
Hochschild, a veteran UN official from Chile, has faced numerous complaints from the women who worked with him claiming that he has harassed them and other inappropriate behavior over the past two years, according to the UN news portal “Bas Blue”.
