Something that should concern everyone is that, according to various studies and surveys, we are one of the Latin American countries where people value and are least satisfied with democracy.
Even though the figures vary from survey to survey, most of them agree that for only half of the people democracy is preferable to any other form of government and the other half do not care about a democratic regime or a non-democratic one and something even more worrisome, 75% of the people are not satisfied with democracy and in general do not have confidence in the institutions.
There is no doubt that in the last 30 years there has been a profound political transformation and that despite its defects and threats of setbacks, the country lives a democratic system with great electoral competition, however, this progress has not been reflected in better conditions. of life for the majority of the population.
The political reform that promoted greater citizen participation in political life did not result in a social reform that would improve people’s living conditions and reduce poverty.
The national agenda has been monopolized almost entirely by political and economic reforms, and little attention has been given to improving education, health, housing and public services, transportation, and the environment. The parties have been fundamentally concerned with electoral issues and have forgotten the needs of the people and carrying out a profound social reform.
This absence of social commitments from the parties and candidates opened the doors for López Obrador to win the Presidency. All of his speech focused on the motto “first the poor” and the fight against corruption as the means to end poverty. Although support programs for the people have been expanded during this government, true social reform has not been carried out and the president has preferred to invest in his great works than in education and health.
As a country, we have a pending issue: carry out a social reform that guarantees equal access to education, health, social and personal security, justice, housing, services and public transport of quality to all Mexicans and a commitment to the preservation of the environment. ambient.
As long as we do not carry out a profound social reform, our democracy will not be consolidated and we run the risk of continuing to be victims of populist governments.
