A new analysis found that some widely available hand sanitizers to ward off infection with the Coronavirus contain high levels of a chemical known to cause cancer.

Tests found that some of these products contain high levels of the cancer-causing chemical benzene.
“These results are alarming and reveal potential public health risks,” said David Light, chief executive of Valisure, an online pharmacy that tests pharmaceutical products, that the company recently analyzed 168 brands of hand sanitizers.
The results were worrying: 17% of samples contained benzene and 8% of samples contained amounts of benzene above the limit set by the Food and Drug Administration to help the market meet disinfectant demand, Bloomberg reported.

Valisure released its findings in a petition to the FDA asking the agency to take action on products with the highest levels of benzene.
The majority of the problem products were made in the United States or China, and were gels. A number of them were widely available, and some were available for purchase on Amazon and Target stores. One of the most contaminated formulas has also been sold in the form of the Baby Yoda bottle. All of the worst products went on sale in April-May 2020.

And earlier this year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert regarding hand sanitizer products from Mexico that were found to be contaminated with methanol, a chemical that is toxic when absorbed through the skin and can be life-threatening if ingested.
And last year, the Food and Drug Administration warned customers to stay away from other “toxic” hand sanitizers in a similar warning. The brands identified in Valisure ‘March 24th report include:
