The South Korean Foreign Ministry announced today, Thursday, that it has requested Qatar to provide support to resolve the issue of Iran’s detention of the Korean oil tanker.
The ministry said Deputy Foreign Minister Choi Jong-gun visited Qatar on January 13th to demand the maximum support for resolving the issue of the detention of the Korean oil tanker and its crew by Iran.
The ministry stated that Choi met with senior Qatari officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Muhammad bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi, and agreed with them to continue close cooperation in the fields of construction, energy and health, as well as cooperation in the arena. On the other hand, the South Korean Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, after his meeting with the Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the CEO of Qatar Petroleum, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, announced that the three South Korean shipbuilding companies had signed a large deal to build liquefied natural gas tankers, expressing great expectations for expanding cooperation. On the other hand, Choi expressed his welcome to restore relations between Qatar and its neighboring countries during the recent Gulf Cooperation Council summit in Saudi Arabia.
The visit of the South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister to Qatar is the first of its kind in 6 years, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that this visit contributed to laying a basis for expanding economic cooperation between the two countries, and it followed a visit he conducted to Iran to discuss the tanker detention crisis.
