The opposition leader was exposed South Korean Lee Jae-myung was stabbed in the neck on Tuesday, while speaking to reporters in the southeastern coastal city of Busan, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The agency published a photo showing the politician lying on the ground with his wound covered with a handkerchief, and Lee was still conscious when he was taken to a hospital. The attacker was arrested at the scene.
Lee, the leader of the Democratic Party, lost to conservative Yoon Suk-yeol in the 2022 presidential election.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed his “deep concern” after the attack on the opposition leader, according to his spokeswoman Kim Soo-kyung.
“Our society must never tolerate this type of violence under any circumstances,” Yoon stressed.
Lee was a former factory worker who was involved in an industrial accident when he was a teenager.
