The leader of the “Podemos” party and the second vice president of the Spanish government, Pablo Iglesias, expressed his complete confidence that the majority of citizens in his country are inclined towards the republican system.
Iglesias defended his proposal, stressing that the republican system not only allows for the selection of the head of state, but also protects public interests in the face of the permanent privacy project pursued by royal parties.
He accused the monarchy of “encouraging an economic pattern that relies on corruption and cheap tourism,” stressing that “the republican system seeks a fairer state that recognizes multiple nationalities, where everyone feels a sense of belonging away from the reality of the division that monarchy has led us to.”
The party continues its efforts to open investigations into the issue of members of the Spanish royal family benefiting from non-state funds, but its proposals are each time rejected by right-wing parties.
The attack comes days after the former king, Juan Carlos, who is in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, paid 700,000 euros to the state treasury to avoid filing a lawsuit against him for “financial corruption.”
