The San Antonio Spurs continue to shape the squad that will start the 2021-22 season in just over a week. Currently, the Texas franchise has 16 guaranteed contracts after announcing the termination of Luka Samanic.
This is a surprising decision to say the least as we are talking about the 19th pick in the 2019 draft, under an agreement that would still have another two years, subject to a team option and a qualified offer. In that same draft, the Spurs chose with the pick 29 to Keldon Johnson, who has followed an upward line contrary to Samanic’s.
The journalist from The Athletic, Matthew Tynan, has speculated with possible attitude and commitment problems on the part of the Croatian player, although at no time does he confirm that this was the trigger. Nor does it rule out that it was the player himself who asked to be cut.
The 21-year-old Croatian international thus closes his stay in San Antonio with a total of 38 games played and averages of 3.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 9.9 minutes.
Still, the Spurs will have to part with one more player to fill the fifteen-chip maximum quota. Presumably, the final decision could point to the names of Al-Farouq Aminu and Keita Bates-Diop.
