SRE announces the end of the “Stay in Mexico” program

The Secretary of Foreign Relations (SRE) reported this Tuesday that it ended a controversial program that allowed asylum seekers in the United States to be sent to Mexican territory for the duration of their process, known as “Stay in Mexico.”

The program Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP, for its acronym in English) was activated for the first time in December 2019 during the administration of the former president Donald Trump.

In mid-June 2022, the entry of migrants into Mexico under the controversial program was stopped by Tijuana, in the northwestern state of Baja California, after the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will notify about the lack of space in border shelters.

Later, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS, for its acronym in English) reported that, as of August 8, the end of the program would begin, in compliance with the mandate ordered by a Federal District Court.

Days ago both governments announced a new border plan that, among other things, allows some Venezuelan migrants to temporarily enter Mexican territory under Title 42, a program that allows US authorities to send migrants to Mexico.
