Prime Video has officially greenlit a new series in the beloved Stargate franchise, marking the first television installment since Stargate Universe concluded in 2011.
The upcoming show is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios, which owns the rights to the franchise. Martin Gero, a veteran writer and producer from all three previous live-action Stargate series, will serve as creator and showrunner. Gero is joined by an extensive creative team, including executive producers Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures. Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who created the original 1994 film, will also executive produce, while franchise architects Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi will return as consulting producers.
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” Gero stated. “I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you.”
The Stargate saga began with the 1994 feature film and expanded into a vast universe with the television shows Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, along with two direct-to-DVD movies and a web series.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the new series is described as a “bold new chapter” in the Stargate universe.
“Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,” said Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD TV development at Amazon MGM Studios. “We’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.”
