Stephen A. Smith came out hot Friday after the Lakers fell to 0-2 on the season following a 103-97 loss to the crosstown-rival Clippers Thursday night.
Despite a disastrous 2021-22 NBA season, the ESPN personality believes LeBron James’s Los Angeles team are in for an even leaner campaign in 2022-23.
‘I just gotta be honest with y’all, they’re awful,’ Smith said during Friday’s episode of First Take. ‘The Lakers are just awful at shooting the basketball.
‘These brothers would put construction workers to shame. Construction workers don’t have nothing on these bricklayers in Southern California.
‘I mean, my God. My God. I can’t recall a time when I’ve seen the Lakers be this bereft of shooters. It’s that bad!’
Smith also addressed the noise surrounding Russell Westbrook who had been shifted to the second unit — for the first time in his career — by Lakers coach Darvin Ham in preseason. Though Westbrook started Thursday.
Stephen A. Smith was at his entertaining, exuberant best when discussing the plight of the LAL
‘I got a lot of love for Russell Westbrook and there’s nothing I have to say about his character,’ Smith said.
‘If you Russell Westbrook, when we say you can’t shoot, you gotta respect the fact that is not an attack against your character. It’s an attack against your ability to shoot the basketball. Last night he was 0-for-11! 0-for-11!’
Westbrook was also 0-6 from the three-point line.
Following a two-point, three rebound, four-assist and five-steal performance, Westbrook described his performance as ‘solid.’
Russell Westbrook had a nightmarish shooting performance going 0-11 from FG and 0-6 3PT
‘Played hard, that’s all you can ask for. Move on to the next one,’ Westbrook added.
Teammate Anthony Davis believes the shooting slump will meet an imminent end despite the Lakers’ struggles through two games.
‘We’re getting great looks, all our guys,’ Davis said postgame. ‘Continue to have confidence in yourself.
‘Don’t let missed shots take away your confidence. Keep shooting. Be confident in your shot, and they’re going to fall.’
