A classic porch swing offers a blend of rustic charm and playful elegance, introducing a sense of gentle motion to any outdoor setting. Only Murders in the Building star Steve Martin recently showcased this appeal in a video of himself playing the banjo on his white, bench-style swing. Adorned with a simple purple cushion, the swing serves as an inviting focal point for his home’s exterior.
Design experts confirm that a well-placed swing is one of the best investments for outdoor furniture, creating a natural gathering space and transforming an otherwise underutilized area.
According to Lindsay Schleis, VP of business development for POLYWOOD, swinging furniture adds a relaxing and nostalgic touch to outdoor spaces. “Porch swings, in particular, can transform a typical patio into a cozy outdoor oasis,” she explains. “They instantly create an inviting place to relax with a good book, or for good conversation with loved ones.”
For those looking to style their own, Schleis first advises considering placement. “I recommend leaving a minimum of three feet in front of and behind your swing and a foot or more on either side, so you don’t knock into tables or walls,” she notes. “Stylistically, consider adding a weather-resistant outdoor rug under the swing to further define the area and achieve that coveted indoor vibe outdoors.”
Functionality is also key. Schleis suggests placing small, durable side tables on either side of the swing to hold drinks, books, or devices. To add personality and comfort, she points to accessories like Martin’s purple cushion. “Weather-resistant cushions can add a pop of color to tie in your overall patio aesthetic,” she says. “A throw blanket goes a long way to completing the cozy look while offering comfort on breezy evenings.”
Finally, incorporating greenery can create a more whimsical, natural atmosphere. “Large plants give your swing area a lush touch,” Schleis suggests. “Look for large hanging plants as well as potted plants whose containers can tie into your theme. Pergolas are having a moment in outdoor design, so consider adding an arch with vines to give your swing location a romantic, European feel.”
