“NATO has a presence in Arctica, and we have strengthened it in the context of expanding our alliance in recent years,” Stoltenberg said in a statement he made on Tuesday during his participation in an event at Stanford University.
“We understand that the strategic importance has increased partly because of global warming, because melting ice means expanding international water areas, and also because of the growing Russian presence,” Stolentberg added.
He continued, “We said previously that the far north is characterized by a low level of tension. Now this saying is not correct, because tension has increased. But to a certain degree this matter reflects what cannot be ignored, which is that our cooperation with Russia in the far north is higher than anywhere else.”
The Secretary-General of NATO said: “There are many causes of concern, we see an enhancement of the Russian military presence, but we are indicating at the same time that we can work with Russia in the far north in some areas and through some methods.”
