Students from Guadalajara develop a racing car for international competition

Guadalajara, Jal.. With talent and passion that far exceed the limitations of financial resources, the team UP Racing —made up of 45 students from the Universidad Panamericana Campus Guadalajara—, obtained a “historic result” during the Formula SAE Michigan 2022, the international competition in which young university students from all over the world participate who design and manufacture their own racing cars.

With an internal combustion car that they manufactured with 300,000 pesos, the Guadalajara team —the only Mexican participant in this competition—, obtained position number 33 overall, and ninth place in the cost test in which the judges carried out a complete audit to the more than 130 international competitors.

“This competition has the part of electric cars and internal combustion cars; we participated with an internal combustion car and the results of the competition in 2022, we had the best result in history; we are a fairly new team because this was the seventh year (since the team was formed) and the third competition in which it has participated”, the captain of UP Racing, Natalia Martínez Torres, told El Economista.

Despite the limited budget, the Jalisco team managed to pass three of the four safety tests, including the Noise Test or noise test that, until now, had been “the coconut” for UP Racing.

“It is a very complicated competition because they use very specific decibel meters and here we do not have the specific device to measure them. It was very exciting because he had been the bogeyman of the team, they didn’t pass that test and now we pass it to the first one”, indicated the team captain, who is currently studying the eighth semester of the career of Mechatronics Engineering.

“It has always been my dream to work in motorsports or to work in a company like Tesla, to be able to lead projects, innovate and contribute to improving the automotive industry,” he stressed.

For her part, the team’s mechanical captain, Mónica Híjar Navarro, a Mechatronics Engineering student at UP, said that “I would love to work in the Formula 1It’s like a golden dream. I am passionate about being in the world of motorsports and I would love to dedicate myself to it in any field: car restoration, modification, in an assembly plant; I love auto mechanics.

Sponsorships

Although the results have been favorable, the university team —in addition to studying and working on the project— is looking for funds to help them build their new racing car with which they will compete in Formula SAE Michigan from 17 to May 20 of this 2023, convinced that, with more resources, they could develop a car with which they can be in a better position.

“We clearly have a lot of support from the university; they are our main sponsor; the Mechatronics degree, the Engineering school, but we have to find a way to fund our project. Most of them are support in kind or they manufacture parts for us. We have just signed with Totalenergies who gave us good support”, indicated the captain.

“This competition is for a lot of talent recruitment; In the last competition, Tesla was present during the entire event, they took us to the cybershop, and there was a representative from Human Resources who is looking for talent”, stressed Natalia Martínez.

“Here in Mexico, in Guadalajara, too; When we are going to offer a sponsorship, what we offer is a team made up of 45 talented kids, with a great desire to grow in the industry”.

It is a multidisciplinary team made up of 45 students from Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, Innovation and Design, Systems Engineering, Communication, Business Administration, Finance, Accounting and Law.
