A new study conducted by the Institute of QIMR Berghofer According to medical research in Australia, people who develop acid reflux or GERD may be more susceptible to infection with the Corona virus and its complications, according to what was published by the British newspaper “Daily Mail”.
The study showed that genes that can cause gastrointestinal diseases are linked to a 15% increase in the risk of severe coronavirus infection and hospitalization.
The study looked at the genes predicted to cause gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, one of the most common gastrointestinal diseases in Australia.
Researcher Dr. Jiu Shenghong, a professor at the Institute of QIMR Berghofer Observational studies have indicated an association between GERD and the coronavirus, due to common risk factors such as obesity, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Dr. Ong explained that the genes predicted to cause GERD were associated with a 15% increase in the risk of severe MERS infection and hospitalization.
The results of the study, which were published in the journal Human Molecular GeneticsGERD could play a direct causal role in the increased risk of hospitalization due to COVID-19.
