A new study revealed that patients who use steroid nasal sprays for allergies or asthma may be less likely to develop severe symptoms of the Corona virus, according to the British newspaper, “Daily Mail”.
Researchers at the US Cleveland Clinic analyzed data from patients with corona in the health care system, and compared the results for those who used and did not use a nasal steroid spray.
Patients who used nasal sprays were 22% less likely to be hospitalized due to severe complications from Corona, 23% less likely to need intensive care, and 24% less likely to die from the virus.
The research provides insight into how protein receptors in the nose are involved in the severity of the disease, and scientists suggest that nasal sprays may be a potential treatment for corona.
One of the study’s lead researchers said: “This study shows the importance of the nose in infection with corona.”
Several researchers found that the receptor for a protein called ACE2 Especially important, as this receptor is found in a variety of different cells in the human body, from the inside of the nose to the depths of the digestive system.
When the Corona virus encounters a future ACE2 , it binds to this piece of protein – and uses the receptor to get into the cell.
Some studies have indicated that ACE2 or receptors ACE2 The nose is particularly important in facilitating the transmission of the coronavirus to other parts of the body.
When a corona patient has more ACE2 receptor activity in his nose, this may lead to an increase in the severity of the Covid virus infection.
The study included a total of 72,000 patients who tested positive for coronavirus between April 2020 and March 2021. Of these patients, about 10,000 had a prescription for a nasal steroid spray before contracting the coronavirus.
The researchers compared patients who used the nasal spray with those who did not, based on age, gender, race, and several medical conditions that cause an additional risk of corona.
