Veteran England striker Daniel Sturridge has signed for Australian club Perth Glory on a free transfer, 19 months after leaving Turkish club Trabzonspor.
The 32-year-old former England and Liverpool striker has been out of action since March 2020 after being suspended for four months for breaching FA gambling regulations.
While searching for a new club, Sturridge trained with Real Mallorca over the summer, and Australia’s Perth Glory has now secured the signature of the Champions League and Premier League champions for the 2021-22 season.
“When the opportunity presented itself, I felt it was the right thing to do, to take my talent somewhere where I can enjoy football in a competitive league and try to help the team be as successful as possible,” Sturridge said.
He added: “I will do my best to move forward, I will work hard and try to help the team win every next game, then we will see where we end when the season is over.”
“I can’t wait to play in a stadium,” he continued.HBF Park“And I hope to bring a smile to many faces.”
Sturridge is the latest high-profile player to move to Australia, following in the footsteps of former Premier League stars Robbie Fowler, Dwight Yorke, William Gallas, Harry Kewell and Tim Cahill.
At the international level, Sturridge was part of the England squad at the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016, scoring eight goals in 26 matches, while also making an appearance for the England squad at the 2012 Olympics in London.
“Daniel’s quality on the pitch speaks for itself,” Glory coach Richard Garcia said.
