On November 21, Al-Burhan and Hamdok signed a political agreement that included the latter’s return to his position, the formation of a government of competencies, and the release of political detainees, but the agreement was opposed by the protesters.
On January 2, Hamdok resigned from his position, hours after three people were killed during demonstrations.

On the other hand, the political street in Sudan witnessed a sharp division over a proposal by the United Nations Mission to facilitate discussions to resolve the political crisis in the country.
On the other hand, the US State Department said that the Quartet, which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States of America, welcomes the announcement of the United Nations Mission in Sudan.
The State Department stressed that the United States strongly supports the Sudanese dialogue initiative sponsored by the United Nations. It urged all Sudanese political actors to seize the opportunity to restore the country’s transition to civil democracy in line with the 2019 Constitutional Declaration.
The US State Department stated that Washington is looking forward to this process achieving results and leading the country towards democratic elections.

For his part, Kamal Karrar, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party, said that the party’s position is clear and consistent, “that there is no dialogue in light of what he called the coup authorities, and that dialogue with this government is completely rejected.”
Member of the Central Council of the Forces of Freedom and Change, Ibrahim Al-Sheikh, welcomed the intervention of the UN mission, and told Al-Jazeera that “this step is urgently required for the international organization to play the role of guarantor and mediator to conclude an agreement that stops excessive violence against protesters.”
Ibrahim Al-Sheikh added that the UN mediation “could put the train on its right track, before the difficult situation worsens and sanctions are imposed on Sudan, within the exercise of the mission’s role and tasks.”
On the other hand, the official spokesman for the Central Council of the Forces of Freedom and Change, Wajdi Saleh, said that she had not received any details regarding the initiative of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, and that it would study it as soon as it was officially received, and would announce its position at the time.
Welcome to the People’s Congress
For his part, the Political Secretary of the People’s Congress, Kamal Omar, welcomed any call for dialogue and communication to get out of the crisis. He called on “the various political, social and youth components to contribute effectively and positively to overcoming crises,” as he put it.
Volker Peretz, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Sudan, had announced earlier the launch of the initial consultations for a political process between the Sudanese parties, to be facilitated by the United Nations.
According to a statement by Peretz, the consultations aim to support the Sudanese parties to reach an agreement to end the current political crisis.
