The rebel Rapid Support Forces did not find difficulty in penetrating into Al-Jazira State, and its capital is Wad Madani – 170 kilometers southeast of the capital, Khartoum – the headquarters of the 1st Infantry Division. It is the state that hosts thousands of displaced people and is an active center for relief operations, which means that Hemedti’s forces occupied Al-Jazira. Without resistance, a serious shift in the level of warfare resulted in the Achilles’ heel, the fatal weakness in the army’s ranks.
The Popular Front cracked
For days, the city of Wad Madani and its surrounding areas have been experiencing a state of panic, displacement, murders and rapes, amid great shock over the Sudanese army’s withdrawal from it, leaving it plundered by the Janjaweed forces, which caused a crack in the wall of trust between the army leadership and its popular incubator.
This is despite the fact that the Sudanese Armed Forces issued a statement to public opinion regarding the withdrawal from the First Division, in which it spoke, for the first time, about ongoing investigations to find out the circumstances of the withdrawal. The brief statement included a phrase that is difficult for people to interpret, but it most likely refers to withdrawals. It is not justified in other areas, as happened in the Yarmouk Factory, Jabal Awlia Camp, south of Khartoum, and most of the Darfur garrisons, in a way that is closer to hand-over operations, and, if we want to be precise, secret deals between the commander of the region and the Rapid Support.
As in many of these cities and vital sites no military battle took place, the last of which is of course the city of Wad Madani, which, with its natural obstacles, is difficult to occupy. Its entrances are very limited, and from the east it is surrounded by the Hantoub Bridge on the bank of the Blue Nile, and on the western strip extend the army’s outposts. To Al-Kamilin locality adjacent to Khartoum.
Until Sunday afternoon, Wad Madani was celebrating victory, and all those who decided to stay there were confident and convinced that it would never fall. So what happened, and will its loss be the beginning of correcting the entire military situation?
A battle without a battle
Intelligence reports, press information, and field facts painted a reassuring picture of what might happen in Wad Madani, but suddenly it collapsed, in a cinematic manner, and no confrontations occurred on the ground, to the point that residents of the city’s neighborhoods were surprised by the rebel forces in front of them, closing roads, erecting outposts, and violating sanctities, with scenes Looting and intimidation, and the battle that had been prepared for days did not happen.
The puzzling thing about the Battle of Wad Madani is that the commander of the withdrawing army left behind large quantities of weapons, ammunition, and military equipment. The rebellion spared the hassle of buying or smuggling weapons across the border, as he did not transport them or destroy them, as usually happens during withdrawal, and it seemed clear, at first glance. The Rapid Support is completely certain that it will control this city.
He threw his most prominent commanders into it, and sent in hundreds of mobilized soldiers and mercenaries from inside Khartoum, some of them in open cars, which are easy targets for flying, and many of them were riding motorcycles, as if they were on a sports excursion, and they would not have taken this step if they did not know that the road was paved in front of them. To invade the island state, obtain abundant spoils, and achieve moral victories with minimal losses.
Old hack
It is known that the Rapid Support Forces rely on paying money and gifts to buy officers, civil administration men, and people with weak souls, and it is almost in this same way that the First Infantry Brigade, “Al-Baqir” fell, on the first day of the war, due to a betrayal by one of the officers of the military institution.
After that, the rebellion expanded in the Al-Kamilin locality, engulfing the Al-Baqir area and the industrial city of Jiyad, and then marched to Al-Masoudiyah, Al-Masid, Al-Nuba, and Kab Al-Jadad, and yet no one moved.
The island’s government was manipulating the people and deceiving that the state’s borders were secure, while it lost its most important localities, and the division commander was not removed at that time. Which means that the conspiracy against the army is old, since the first day of the war, and even beyond that, and attempts to penetrate its ranks have not stopped.
This was one of the reasons for the fall of the Salvation regime, and that fall tempted international intelligence agencies to invest in this conflict, sponsor the rebellion, and provide it with money and intelligence information.
Danger lurks for everyone
After the fall of the city of Wad Madani under the hands of the invaders, responsibility was placed on the division commander, Major General Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and information was released about his removal from his position and accusing him of treason, but the fall of many military regions and garrisons, in the same way, indicates that the matter goes beyond individuals, and that there is a general case of collusion and negligence. Collectively, and it is not unlikely – if this is not a risky thought – that someone is preparing the conditions for military coups, and that the plan to plunge the country into chaos is proceeding as planned, as danger still lurks in Sudan, and everyone is waiting for the horror of the next surprise to see what to do about it.
Controlling Al-Jazira State represents a potential turning point in the course of battles, specifically in central Sudan. If the army does not rush to carry out a comprehensive military operation and restore this state, and advance from it to Khartoum, the rift will widen, the entire country will collapse, and the militia will spread panic and destroy… infrastructure, opening training camps, creating new supply lines, launching into the eastern states, and even threatening Port Sudan itself, the seat of the government, the airport, and the main port. Residents fleeing the war will not feel safe after today in any Sudanese region.
The loophole and solutions
The Rapid Support provided ridiculous justifications for the attack on Wad Madani, including preventing the gathering of the Mustafaris on whom Al-Burhan had bet, and providing security for the population, at a time when the Secretary-General of the Islamic Movement came out in an audio recording in which he explicitly called on the army leaders to spread the facts to the Sudanese, and to arm the Mustafarins; To avoid a state of cracking on the internal front.
This is almost the motive of the latest attack, accompanied by black propaganda and psychological warfare from those behind the Rapid Support. Its goal is to make the army appear weak, which creates a rift in trust between it and the Sudanese people, and then takes its biggest bite.
Of course, Wad Madani is not the end of the story, and army leaders need quick reviews of their operational strategy, from defending military sites, to attacking, deploying on the ground, preserving the most important points of strength, which is the people’s rally around them, and implementing special operations targeting the leaders of the Rapid Support, In addition to looking for strong allies abroad, you cannot fight alone, and your enemy has external protection and support.
Above all, there is a need for a national government that meets the challenges, and that bears the burdens of state administration from the army, so that it can devote itself to eliminating the rebellion and cutting off the external conspiracy.
