Paulo Henrique was called up to the national team as an injury replacement for Roma’s Wesley. He was reportedly on his way to Santa Catarina for a family vacation when he received the call from manager Carlo Ancelotti, forcing a change in his travel plans.
According to former player and current coach Jorginho, the full-back possesses key attributes that can benefit the Brazilian team’s tactical system.
“He is a very strong marker, which is the primary quality a full-back needs,” Jorginho noted. “Today, the focus is often on attacking, high-pressing lines, and offensive play, which is undoubtedly important. But first and foremost, a full-back must be a defender. He excels in one-on-one situations and provides good cover. I’ve also noticed he communicates well on the field, which is a great asset for his position. Offensively, he is very capable and his final decision-making has been steadily improving.”
Jorginho believes the competition for the team’s right-back position is wide open, suggesting that both Paulo Henrique and Botafogo’s Vitinho could secure a spot on the final roster for the 2026 World Cup.
“I believe the position is completely up for grabs,” he stated. “I have a special regard for both Paulo Henrique and Vitinho. Paulo Henrique, in particular, plays for Vasco, a club I identify with strongly. At the moment, there is no established starter at right-back, so they both have an opportunity to claim that role or at least remain in contention for a final World Cup call-up.”
