Deadpool & Wolverine maintained its lead at the North American box office this week, taking in $15.2 million in its sixth weekend, according to preliminary figures from Exhibitor Relations.
The Marvel superhero comedy, starring Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), is on track to cross the $1.3 billion mark worldwide.
Exhibitor Relations noted that the film became the 16th film in cinema history to gross over $600 million in North America, including 11 produced by Walt Disney Studios, such as Deadpool and Wolverine.
The second place went to the science fiction horror film “Alien: Romulus”, as this ninth part of the “Alien” series achieved revenues of $9.3 million in its third weekend after its release, after it had managed to briefly snatch the top spot from “Deadpool and Wolverine” upon its release.
The new part deals with the story of a group of space colonists who, while exploring an abandoned space station, encounter a face-eating alien.
In third place, with $7.4 million, was Sony's “It Ends with Us,” a romantic drama based on the popular novel by American author Colleen Hoover, starring “Gossip Girl” star Blake Lively.
“Reagan,” a biopic of the late US President Ronald Reagan, came in fourth, also taking in $7.4 million, a tally that analyst David A. Gross described as “good for a political biopic,” despite the film being met with critical reservations.
The film, which supports the conservative president, is released about two months before the US presidential election. Dennis Quaid plays Ronald Reagan, whose story is told in the film from his childhood to his years in the White House.
It was noteworthy that the thriller “Twisters” returned to the top five films, thanks to its achievement of $7.2 million, after it dropped to sixth place last week.
This new take on the 1996 Oklahoma tornadoes stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as a meteorologist who is forced to team up with a daring storm chaser played by Glen Powell.
Revenues were weak at the start of the summer season in North American theaters due to the Covid-19 wave and the fallout from last year's Hollywood strikes, but good results from “Deadpool, Wolverine,” “Alien: Romulus,” “Inside Out 2” and “Hurricanes” helped turn the tide.
Beetlejuice, the sequel to Tim Burton's Beetlejuice, is also expected to give a strong boost to the box office when it opens next weekend.
