(Trends Wide) –– A man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with the slaying of rapper Takeoff, Houston Police Department Chief Troy Finner announced Friday at a news conference.
Finner said 33-year-old Patrick Xavier Clark was arrested on the east side of Houston, Texas, late Thursday night. Another man, Cameron Joshua, 22, was charged with illegal possession of weapons.
Takeoff, a member of the hip-hop trio Migos, was shot dead during a dispute outside a private party on November 1. Authorities said at the time, Takeoff, 28, was found dead at the scene when officers arrived at 810 Billiards and Bowling in downtown. They also noted that “at least two” weapons were fired in the incident.
“There was an incident that happened after the party was over,” said Sgt. Michael Arrington. “There was a large group of people that had gathered in the front gate area, just outside the building,” he added.
“We lost a good man,” Finner said Friday. He also added that he spoke with Takeoff’s family and thanked them for his patience as the department reviewed the facts and the investigation before making an arrest.
Who was Takeoff
Born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Takeoff began performing with his uncle and partner Quavo, and Offset, in 2008 under the name Migos. The trio rose to fame with their 2013 single called “Versace.”
In 2016 they had another peak of popularity with the release of the hit “Bad and Boujee”, which featured the artist Lil Uzi Vert.
The single quickly became an internet sensation, spawning a multitude of memes featuring the lyric “raindrop, raindrop.”
The song got an even bigger boost after “Atlanta” creator and star Donald Glover mentioned the single during an acceptance speech at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards.
“I really want to thank the Migos, not for being on the show, but for doing ‘Bad and Boujee,'” Glover said at the time. “It’s the best song ever.”
Takeoff and Quavo had recently formed the duo “Unc & Phew” and released their debut album, “Only Built for Infinity Links”, on October 7th.
The music video for their song “Messy” was released on Monday.
During a recent conversation on the “Drink Champs” podcast just days before his death, Takeoff accepted praise for his performance in the new project.
“I’m quiet. I’m relaxed, but it’s time to blow it up,” Takeoff said. “It is time to accept the flowers. I don’t want them later when I’m not here anymore.”
