The Swiss government has pledged to implement new recommendations to enhance cooperation between national units and between the cantons and improve communication. It also plans to make a legal amendment to extend monitoring of computers and postal services.
The announcement of these plans comes on the heels of the release of a parliamentary report on a potential threat to Switzerland’s security due to the rise of violent extremism.
The report finds that violent extremism is becoming a growing concern and there is a greater likelihood of an attack by people from the far right.
Last September, parliament approved tougher measures, including a ban on financing terrorist activities and the recruitment and training of suspected militants traveling to conflict areas.
Last Wednesday, the Swiss government reviewed a nationwide report on security training for the year 2019, in which more than 2,000 high-ranking representatives from the national authorities and the 26 cantonal authorities participated in the three-day exercise that tested Switzerland’s ability to deal with a persistent terrorist threat.
The report found that Switzerland was prepared to face a threat at the operational level, but identified shortcomings at the administrative level.
