This week, the 29-year-old announced his military promotion on his Instagram story, captioning a photo of his official certificate with a playful reference to the online debate. “It’s them good jeans,” he wrote.
The post directly references the slogan from his sister’s American Eagle ad, in which she discusses how “great genes” are passed down through families—a play on words for the brand’s denim “jeans.” The campaign sparked significant online backlash, with some critics interpreting it as having undertones of “eugenics” and “White supremacy.”
However, the ad also drew many defenders, including former President Donald Trump. In response to the debate, American Eagle released a statement clarifying its intent. “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the company stated. “Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.”
