Under the above heading, Igor Sobotin wrote in Nezavisimaya Gazeta about Israeli preparations for an armed conflict on the border with Syria in 2021.
The article stated: Southern Syria could turn into the arena of the “first northern war” between Israel and the Iranian forces. This came in the threat assessment for 2021 presented by the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University (INSS). Experts advise, most of whom are former representatives of the Israeli army and intelligence agencies, to prepare well for such a development in events. In addition, the pro-Iranian forces, according to these calculations, are able to significantly increase the accuracy of their strikes in 2021.
The military scenario also appears in the section of the report, which deals with possible attempts by the Joseph Biden administration to return to the discussion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the nuclear deal). The Institute for National Security Studies experts recommend that Israel prepare for the possibility of what is called a “reliable military option” if Biden wants to restore US participation in this multilateral agreement. But at the same time, analysts point out that: “The change of administration in the United States and the arrival of President-elect Biden to the White House require Israel to find ways of dialogue and influence that would reduce the risks of a possible return to the wrong nuclear agreement.”
At the same time, the Israeli army leadership decided these days to “cover” the areas of southern Israel. It deployed Iron Dome anti-missile batteries near the city of Eilat. This happened in the context of the Israeli army’s predictions of the possibility of bombing the Jewish state in the near future, not only from the Gaza Strip, but from the northwestern regions of Yemen. Estimates of the success of Iran and its supporters in the project to modify high-precision guided missiles vary, but the Yemeni territories were mentioned repeatedly, over the past year, as one of the possible places through which to launch an attack on Israeli sites.
Iran denies the activities attributed to it in southern Syria, and accuses Israel of trying to provoke a military conflict, in the last days of Donald Trump’s presidency.
