The non-governmental organization “Save the Children” reported that torrential rains inundated the overcrowded IDP camps in northwest Syria, killing a child and displacing tens of thousands of their tents.
In a statement, the organization stated that “a six-year-old child was killed and more than 41,000 people were displaced, who were affected by the storm, which caused damage or destruction to 62 camps, specifically in northern Idlib and western Aleppo.”
“The child was inside his tent during the heavy rain, and the tent collapsed on him, without anyone being able to save him,” said activist Emily Whitt.
Sonia Khosh, Director of Special Response for Syria at the organization, called for “accelerating the expansion of relief efforts for children and families in the affected areas,” stressing the need to “facilitate urgent humanitarian aid access across borders.”
In turn, the United Nations Deputy Regional Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in Syria, Mark Cutts, warned that “deteriorating weather conditions may worsen conditions with snowfall and temperatures below 3 degrees Celsius in the coming days.”
The areas controlled by the armed factions, headed by the “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” in Idlib and its environs, are hosting about 3 million people, half of whom are displaced persons distributed in more than a thousand camps along the borders between Idlib and Turkey.
