The administration of Al-Hol camp revealed the causes of a fire that affected dozens of tents, and said that it had killed 6 people, while Doctors Without Borders expressed its “shock and concern” about the insecurity in the camp in northern Syria.
In a statement read during a press conference today, the administration identified 4 causes that lead to annual human losses, which it said should be addressed.
Hawar news agency quoted the statement as saying that the “unfortunate accident” that Al-Hol camp (42 kilometers west of Hasakah) was subjected to on the 27th of last month was caused by an “explosion of a heater working on the crocin.”
The statement, which was read by a member of the Camp Relations Office, Jaber Sayed Mustafa, confirmed that the fire resulted in the death of 6 people and wounding 36 others, to varying degrees.
The statement added that there are 4 reasons behind the phenomenon of fires that cause human losses annually, which “must be addressed, to reduce this phenomenon,” and said that they can be summarized in: changing the heating pattern from kerosene to diesel, first, and in finding a successful mechanism to extinguish fires at the highest speed, secondly. Third, by leaving safe distances between the tents to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring tents, and fourth: preparing sections inside and outside the camp to receive burn cases.
The statement said, “Hospitals contracting with the World Health Organization and international organizations refuse to receive the burn cases that were referred to them from Al-Hol camp, under the pretext that there are no burns departments and the required medicines are not provided.”
The statement concluded by expressing his wishes that this incident would constitute a “turning point for all, to rethink the existing measures and develop them to avoid such incidents in the future.”
While the “Doctors Without Borders” organization announced that one of its employees was killed and 3 others were wounded in the camp. The organization expressed its “shock and sadness over the events that took place, and its deep concern about the insecurity facing the camp residents, in which women and children constitute two thirds.”
A statement by the organization on its Facebook page stated that one of its crew members was killed in the tent where he lived on the night of February 24, and the statement added that, three days later, “a girl, the daughter of another employee, died in a fire that broke out during a wedding party in the camp, and was also injured.
