Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council said in a statement that if democracy and freedom in Hong Kong continue to deteriorate and affect its position as an international financial center, it will not benefit mainland China at all.
On Wednesday, the authorities in Hong Kong arrested dozens of opposition figures, under the new national security law, in the largest security operation of its kind targeting critics of Beijing, according to party and security sources.
The list of detainees included former parliamentarians pro-democracy such as James Tu, Andrew Wan and Lam Cheuk Ting, as well as younger activists.
