Tamaulipas agreed with Conagua that the transfer of El Cuchillo to the Marte R. Gómez dam will be carried out: Américo Villarreal

Monterrey, NL. The governor of Tamaulipas, Americo Villarrealreported this Thursday, November 17, that he met with the director general of the National Water Commission (With water), Germán Martínez Santoyo, where it was agreed to guarantee the transfer of water from Nuevo León to Tamaulipas, without restrictions.

On his Twitter account, the state president published: “Today I met with Eng. Germán A. Martínez Santoyo, general director of the CNA, where it was agreed to guarantee the transfer of water, guaranteeing irrigation to the producers of District 026, no restrictions. Next week a joint declaration will be made with the NL government”.

In turn, Germán Martínez indicated on his Twitter account: “I held a working meeting with the governor of Tamaulipas, and his team, to discuss support strategies for agricultural producers in that great state.”

It should be remembered that there are about 4,700 farmers, who irrigate and sow up to 70,000 hectares of sorghum and corn, thanks to this hydraulic resource, he commented to The EconomistJorge Lera Mejía, professor-researcher at the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT).

The specialist added that next week there will be a joint statement by the governors of both states.

“The governor of Tamaulipas said that since last November 10 he met with the representatives of the 11 irrigation units of district 026, Bajo Río San Juan, which was expected as of November 1, the time in which the producers of said district made protests because there was uncertainty of not having water for their crops and not being able to receive the seeds and supply credits on time”.

It is worth mentioning that on November 1, the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, indicated that that day the transfer of the El Cuchillo dam to the Marte R. Gómez reservoir in Tamaulipas should have started, however, it was going to be extended because the National Water Commission would carry out a technical study and from there a decision would be made.

“The instruction is to extend said act so that Conagua does an in-depth technical study and from there a decision is made that may take a few weeks (…) precisely I am going to speak with the governor of Tamaulipas (Américo Villarreal), the idea It is that we can extend it so that Conagua can carry out the technical study”, he emphasized.

The El Cuchillo dam has a storage capacity of 1,123 million cubic meters and is the largest reservoir in the state. With the rains of September and October, as of the 30th of this month, it had 762,342 million cubic meters of storage, and a filling of 67.88% of its capacity, so the conditions for carrying out the transfer were met.

The agreement signed by Nuevo León and Tamaulipas in 1996 indicates that if the El Cuchillo dam has a volume greater than 315 million cubic meters and the Marte R. Gómez dam stores less than 700 million cubic meters, the water must be sent.
