(CNN) — Here’s a true story of multiple Taylors: Taylor Lautner’s wife, Taylor Dome, got the reaction from all of us when the actor commented on Taylor Swift’s infamous moment with Kanye West during the MTV Video Music Awards.
In a video from his “The Squeeze” podcast, which was posted on TikTok Wednesday, Dome asked Lautner: “If you could go back to a moment in your life, what would it be and what would you say to yourself?”
“It would probably be the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, when I presented the award to Taylor (Swift) and I didn’t know that the Kanye thing wasn’t a set thing,” Lautner said. Her words made Dome literally recoil in surprise and say, “I’m in shock.”
West, who now goes by “Ye,” took the stage and interrupted Swift’s acceptance speech to say, “I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time!”
Dome noted that Lautner and Swift, who briefly dated in 2009, had just gone public with their then relationship.
Lautner explained that he had presented the award to Swift and “took five steps back and was standing six feet behind her” when West jumped up on stage as she was speaking.
“I can barely hear it. I can’t see them,” Lautner said. “I just assumed this was all a staged and rehearsed act, because otherwise why would Kanye West be jumping on stage interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense.”
It wasn’t until Swift turned around and could see her face that she realized it hadn’t been planned, Lautner explained.
In 2016, Lautner confirmed that he was the inspiration for Swift’s 2010 song “Back to December”. He and Dome got married last year.
