The group stage competitions of the African Cup of Nations currently being held in Ivory Coast ended with 16 teams qualifying for the knockout rounds of the continental championship.
Senegal, the holder of the last edition’s title, is the only team that qualified with the full mark after earning 9 points and topping the third group. Cape Verde, which may represent the “dark horse” in the tournament, also achieved a surprise by topping the second group, which includes Egypt, Ghana and Mozambique.
Three Arab teams qualified for the knockout rounds: Morocco, Egypt and Mauritania.

- the second group: Cape Verde (7 points), Egypt (3 points).
- Third group: Senegal (9 points), Cameroon (4 points), Guinea (4 points).
- Fourth group: ANgola (7 points), Burkina Faso (4 points), Mauritania (3 points).
- Fifth group: Mali (5 points), South Africa (4 points) and Namibia (4 points).
- Sixth group: Morocco (7 points) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (3 points).

The best third-place finishers among the 6 groups
The teams of Guinea, Mauritania, Namibia and Ivory Coast guaranteed their qualification to the eighth final as the best third-place finishers.
The Football Association’s regulations indicate that the first and second-placed teams qualify directly to the quarter-finals, while the best 4 third-placed teams are selected from among the six groups.
