The Telephone Operators Union of the Mexican Republic (STRM) awaits a new retirement proposal for newly hired workers, which would contribute to advancing the process of reviewing their collective bargaining agreement and avoiding further tension in the salary review of 2023.
In an interview Francisco Hernández Juárez, general secretary of the telephone operators, explained that “after the installation of the technical committee it was shown that the union was right regarding the impact on the company’s finances, it is not true that the entry of new workers could turn Telmex upside down.”
An actuarial calculation was made of the labor liability that the company would have for retirement, “we showed that the company magnified the problem and that in reality it said that it was 20,000 million and we that it was 500 million and it turned out to be 300 million the cost of retirement at current values; In this sense, we made progress and managed to get the company to withdraw its proposal to apply the Afores to newly hired workers, and we are working with the company on a retirement proposal that will not be the same as before, but it will be a retirement,” he explained. the leader of the telephone operators.
It should be noted that this process of contractual review of the Telephone Operators Union has been under discussion for almost three years, the underlying problem of which is retirement, a fact that led to the outbreak of a strike on July 21.
In this sense, Hernández Juárez did not highlight that there will be tension next year in his review, “if we do not manage to fix it -in the remainder of the year- surely the company will not want to fill our vacancies, promote differentiated salaries, and affect other benefits, the problem is that people no longer have patience, and the possibility of a strike, if the problem is not resolved, is very high two months before the elections”.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, he explained, continues to work on the proposal as part of the arbitration that is being carried out, and the details are being refined, “they have been working hard and I am confident that this problem can be resolved, so that the union concentrate on other projects and support Telmex to remain in the market in the least way”.
He highlighted that the STRM has already carried out the contract legitimization process, “and the truth is that people were asked if their contract is supported or not and we achieved the participation of 87% of the telephone operators and 98% of them were in favor of supporting the contract. contract. So there is no doubt that we are going to defend with all the forces that as an organization the historic contract of the telephone operators”.
