Tequila indicators grow more than 500% since the creation of the CRT

Guadalajara, Jal. The creation of a evaluation body of conformity was the key for tequila, the most representative drink of Mexico, to have grown at the rate it has done both inside and outside the country.

And it is that in the 28 years of operation of the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT)the three main indicators of the drink -production, export and consumption of agave- grew by 500%, stated its president Miguel Ángel Domínguez.

He stressed that the historical figures that tequila has reached are the result of coordinated work between all the sectors that make up the agave-tequila production chain, as well as the inspection and certification carried out by the CRT to comply with the Official Mexican Standard NAME-006-SCFI-2012.

“The quality and authenticity of each of the liters that are produced is what has led our national drink par excellence to conquer the world and, currently, it is already protected in 56 countries,” stressed the president of the CRT.

According to statistical data from the agency, in 1995 (the year the CRT was founded), tequila production amounted to 104 million liters, while in 2022 it reached 651.5 million liters, representing an increase of 526%.

In terms of exports, in 2022 416.8 million liters were sold abroad; that is, an increase of 541% compared to the exports of 28 years ago.

Only to the United States, the main international market for tequila, in these almost three decades, exports have grown 526%, while shipments to the European Union -the second most important market for the Mexican drink- have increased 350% in the same period. lapse.

In Europe, countries like Germany, Spain, France, the United Kingdom and Italy are in the top ten countries that import tequila.

In relation to agave Azul Tequilana Weberthe main raw material for tequila, its consumption grew 835% between 1995 and 2022.

Tequila production has surpassed its own record for five consecutive years; Meanwhile, exports have been breaking their record for three years, while in agave consumption they have exceeded their figure for nine consecutive years.

The foregoing is explained due to the increase in demand for tequila of the 100% Agave category, since previously, the main percentage in both production and exports corresponded to the “Tequila” category; that is to say, the one that is made with 51% Agave and 49% other sugars.
