Tequila reaches record export figures for the thirteenth consecutive year

According to statistics from Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), until November of this year, 601.6 million liters of the drink had been produced, which represents an increase of 14.1% compared to the 527 million liters produced in all of 2021.

In relation to exports, from January to November 386.1 million liters were sold abroad, which represents an increase of 14.1% in relation to exports for the entire year 2021, when 338.1 million liters were sent to international markets.

USA -the main destination for the national drink-, also exceeded the number of liters imported from tequila of all of 2021, when 288.3 million liters were sent to that country.

And it is that between January and November 2022, 314.4 million liters of tequila were exported to this destination, which represents 81.4% of the total volume exported.

In the top ten of tequila importing countries, Colombia It is the only Latin American country and appears in seventh position, while Japan is positioned in tenth place and is the only Asian country that appears on the list.

“The 120 countries to which tequila is exported are of great importance due to the volume they represent; For this reason, we are taking care of shielding our national drink with all the regulations that the different markets require of it”, mentioned the president of the CRT, Miguel Ángel Domínguez.

He cited as an example the issue of sustainability and the free deforestation that recently became officially an entrance requirement to the European Union.

Domínguez Morales said that with the Agave Responsable Ambiental (ARA) certification, “tequila is taking a step forward by already implementing this tool of responsibility with the environment.”

The increase in production -which was mostly from the 100% Agave category– It also caused an increase in the consumption of raw materials.

From January to November of this 2022, the industry consumed 2,428 million tons of agave, 20.2% more than the 2019 million tons consumed in all of 2021. According to CRT statistics, this is the ninth consecutive year that the consumption record has been broken of the plant.
